Top Things to Do in Berat

Berat, known as the “City of a Thousand Windows,” is one of Albania’s most beautiful and historic destinations. With its Ottoman architecture, ancient fortress, and charming old neighborhoods, the city offers visitors a unique glimpse into Albania’s past.

Here are some of the top things to do in Berat.

1. Berat Castle

Berat Castle is one of the most important landmarks in the city and one of the largest castles in Albania. Dating back to the 13th century, the fortress dominates the skyline and offers incredible views over Berat and the Osum River.

What makes Berat Castle unique is that it is still inhabited today. Within the citadel walls, you’ll find a small village with traditional houses, local shops, churches, and small cafés. Walking through its narrow stone streets feels like stepping back in time.

2. Visit the Red Mosque

Inside the castle complex lie the ruins of the Red Mosque, one of the oldest mosques in Albania and the first built in Berat.

Today, only parts of the walls and the tall minaret remain standing. Despite its partial ruins, the mosque remains an important historical symbol and offers a fascinating glimpse into the early Islamic history of the region.

3. Explore the Old Town of Mangalem

The Mangalem neighborhood forms the historic heart of Berat. This picturesque district is famous for its white Ottoman houses stacked on the hillside, each with large windows that face the valley.

These countless windows gave Berat its nickname, “The City of a Thousand Windows.”

Historically, Mangalem was the Muslim quarter, while across the river was Gorica, the Christian neighborhood. Today both areas form the historic center of the city and are among the most beautiful places to explore in Albania.

4. Walk Across Gorica Bridge

Gorica Bridge is one of the most photographed landmarks in Berat.

This historic stone bridge with seven arches connects the neighborhoods of Mangalem and Gorica across the Osum River. Walking across the bridge offers stunning views of the old town, the surrounding mountains, and the impressive Berat Castle rising above the city.

It’s one of the best spots in Berat for photography and enjoying the atmosphere of this historic town.
